CASIO SK1 - CIRCUIT BENT MADNESS!!
Circuit bending is the creative, chance-based customization of the circuits within electronic devices such as low-voltage, battery-powered guitar effects, children's toys and digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. In today's video I explore the crazy world of a circuit bent Casio SK-1. Don't except beautiful musical compositions in this one, but there will be plenty of interesting noise!

In the final installment of my deep dive into Mutable Instruments Braids I explore some of the more experimental synth engines deeper down the list. There are some really fun jams in this one including a traditional Japanese style jam which is the first time I've done that in modular (i think!). Hope you enjoy! I really enjoyed making this part 2 video on Mutable Instruments Braids. The jams came really easy and some of the sounds are very inspiring. As I suspected when I started this video series - Braids is a serious module and every bit as fun as Plaits. Hope you enjoy! MUTABLE INSTRUMENTS BRAIDS - Part 1

I'd always assumed that Mutable Instruments Braids was just an older and not-as-good version of Plaits. Actually, it's a very different and independent module (with some overlap), and I like it a lot. Is it better than Plaits? Demoing this synthesizer is one of the most fun videos I've ever made. This synth has (almost) everything. Over 900 drums and 600 sampled waveforms combine to create multitimbral compositions. There are hundreds of presets and and so many amazing effects. If you can find one of these at a decent price then grab it! Exploring ARTURIA eFX Motions with my Modular FX Rack!
👍👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿
My god, you found some insanely good sounds with this combo. I only have 11 HP left and was planning to get a Pam’s… but this video is making me think I should considering upgrading my case :( I’m starting to understand why they say Eurorack will bankrupt you.
That polymetric riff at the end of jam 2 was infectious AF!
Ally, .. "There's more, than meets the eye" .. so true, about MI modules. After owning Beads for awhile, .. I did start thinking that I had experienced most of it's possibilities .. but, that wasn't even close, to being correct. .. thanks
Using the Trig input unlocks the individual words within the banks of banks of LPC words in the Vowel & Speech model. Some pretty amusing stuff there!
lovely! Hey... which Boss micro rack is that? It sounds fantastic with it! <3
This sounds so amazing! Are there any tutorials how to circuit bend it? And can you still use it with it's default sound?
Thanks for running something musical through this module; God only knows why others don't do it during their reviews.
Great sounds dude
I love my explorer. If you want to as analog as possible, turn up Analog feel, random phase. Just choose the first 4 wave shapes, being that those are the square, sine, saw, and triangle. Throw a 24db ladder filter and some eq, and you have those analogy sounds synth people love so much
I want to sample and flip almost all of the sounds.
How would you say the delay algorithms on the Z5000 (or ECHOZ if you have it) compare to the FX Aid delays? I have a ZVERB that I use as send/return reverb in almost every patch but I have no delay in my rack at all (other than looping delay mode in monsoon). I know the FX AID is more versatile, but since I already have a reverb I like, I'd primarily be using it for delays, so I'm feeling inclined just to get a dedicated delay like ECHOZ. Any other recommendations I should look at?
Hapax would be cool with this
I had an SK1 back in 1985 until somewhere in the 90s it disappeared!
that sounds awesome! 7:32 was my favourite sound
かっこええ
is the resonance knob global or can you adjust for each individual filter?
The resonance is a global control. I think it's just the frequency, panning, and volume for each filter that can be adjusted :)
@@TheUnperson I saw your video on the Altas, it was cool but it seemed like a more straightforward filter bank. Would you say the Night Rider is the more exotic of the two?
Brilliant vid!!
Hah cool! I recently ordered a circuit bent Casio Sk4 with a 50 point patch bay off someone from Reverb, tho have been waiting 2 weeks for it, hope it arrives eventually. The sounds you're getting from this are lovely.
I searched, found and acquired a Micro X because of you!! I really don’t need this lol 😭😭😭
Kind of sounds like Data Bender with a keyboard attached! (Prefer the Data Bender tbh)!
Sample Pack available here: theunpers0n.gumroad.com/ Or here: www.patreon.com/user?u=77631102
Brilliant sound! What was the postproduction?
Just found your channel! It’s amazing. These UA-cam pieces could compile into a great album. Do it man. This is great stuff. 🔥
I think Algo would be nuts with a MI Stages (or clone). Even just running 6 decay-only envelopes, let alone all the more complicated functions You’d have 6 additional HP for something else too, if you swapped it for Maths
Man I don't know what I'm digging more: the sounds or the way you're using them so musically haha.
Awesome. Can it play a different sample per key? Or is it just one sample chromatically across all keys?
what is the drum machine u use?
I really liked your effects. This was also my first in Modolaren: Nautilus / Data Bender / Happy Nerding half a year ago. A Desmodus Versio is planned for the future. I can also swap to Beads and Clouds if necessary. I'm looking forward to tomorrow, when a little used Arturia Drumbrute Impact arrives. At first I completely overlooked it ( reason: it is usually advertised in "harder use"). I only became aware of it because I noticed that it was pleasantly "smooth" in many of your videos. It prevents me from wanting to implement the rhythm section in the modular much more expensively (according to my wishes) - at the beginning. I'm delighted 🤩 and think I'll have a lot of fun with it, thanks to you.
does Rings do anything interesting to drums? (this is so fucking beautiful btw)
this is absolutely beautiful
I will never know how, but I nabbed an DM-100 on ebay for $250 years ago. It scares me.
How dare you. No, really, though, that's a beautiful track - I could get lost in the guitar loop. I don't really see what you're doing as comparable to a "backing track" in the same sense that people often criticize - the justification of that criticizing is another discussion entirely.
Always great videos and jams. Inspiring. I’ve used Softube Modular for a while and, while I’ve got other hardware synths I’m really tempted by some Eurocrack. Your case and module selection looks like a really intelligent and flexible set of choices. Do you share the specs anywhere if someone wanted to build something similar?
This channel is a vibe 🙏🏽
wow. what a great sounding module ❤❤❤
One of the few musical demos of this synth. Nice work!
Mylar set me up and you spiked me. My first RYK module is in the mail.
Hell yeah dude this video kicked ass
Beads is SO much more than granular synthesis! It is a core part of my Plaits, Marbles, Tides, Beads (4ms pod cased) "Music Easel". Never get's old even after many years of use.
RYK always knocks it out of the park aesthetically!
Hi Ally, this now looks strangely familiar. How on earth did you sync Pam to the KO-II and the Arturia?
Hey... Hope everyobody is doing great. Im having issues to sync my Op-1 to my Ep133. When I send midi out from the Ep133 using a TRS or USB cable, the Op-1 wouldn't receive it. When in Metronome I can't even see the EXT sign to link mode. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to fix it?? Thanks!!
Honestly a whole lot more versatility with ALGO than I had expected. In some ways, it reminded me of some of the sounds I get from the Spherical Wavetable Navigator, but then pushing the FM around almost reminded me of some of the cross-patching chaos. Looking forward to how you push this one next.
I was like "it's cool but I dunno if I'd want my main osc to be fm.." and then of course you made me say "WOW that's gritty, ohh beautiful, huh that's complex" like...every other osc you show us lol
